One man's lifelong search for a house of his own, across colonial Trinidad. The map runs from the sugar country of Caroni where Mohun Biswas is born, through the market town of Chaguanas and the family compound he marries into, to the capital, Port of Spain, and the small house in St James that is finally his.
The story begins with Biswas born into poverty on a sugar estate in rural Caroni, in a family of Trinidadian Indians tied to the cane. An early loss scatters the household and sends him drifting, without land or trade of his own, toward the world of shops and towns.
