Stephen Dedalus Clongowes Wood College, Clane
Chapter 1
The book opens with a small boy far from home at a Jesuit boarding school, learning the pecking order of dormitory, playing field and study hall. A pandying by a prefect for broken glasses becomes his first act of protest, when he walks to the rector to say he was punished unfairly. Clongowes is where Stephen first tests conscience against authority.
Chapter 1
explicit The novel names Clongowes as Stephen's boarding school; sited at the real Jesuit college near Clane in Co. Kildare, about 30 km west of Dublin. Marked outside the setting box because it lies well beyond the city the book otherwise inhabits.
