The Italian and Roman scenes are flagged as excursions beyond the setting.

The young Gascon d'Artagnan comes to Paris to join the King's Musketeers and falls in with Athos, Porthos and Aramis, plunging into the intrigues of Louis XIII's court, Cardinal Richelieu, and the deadly Milady de Winter. Dumas ranges across a real seventeenth-century geography: the Musketeers' Paris and the Louvre, the dash to London to save the Queen's honour, the siege of La Rochelle, and the convent where Milady meets her end.
