Anton Hansen Tammsaare
Estonia's national epic opens as the farmer Andres settles at Vargamäe, a hard, swampy farm, and spends a lifetime draining the bog, wresting a living from the land, and feuding with his neighbour Pearu, before his son Indrek carries the family's search for truth to the city. Tammsaare drew Vargamäe from his own home in Järva County: the farm and its endless ditches, the bog it fights, and the parish church, while distant Tallinn is where the next generation goes to be schooled and changed.
