The Palais Garnier is real, and Leroux insisted his story was too. He maps the building in precise detail: the auditorium and its great chandelier, Box Five on the grand tier, the dancers' foyer, the roof beneath Apollo's lyre, and the cellars below. The lake is real as well, a cistern built to hold back the groundwater that Leroux turned into the Phantom's underground lake.
