Lewis Grassic Gibbon
Chris Guthrie grows up on a hard-won farm in the Mearns, the farming country of north-east Scotland, torn between the land she loves and the learning that could take her from it, as the First World War comes to break the old crofting world for good. Grassic Gibbon set his parish of Kinraddie in the real Howe of the Mearns around Arbuthnott: the farm of Blawearie, the ancient standing stones above it, the parish kirk, and the market town of Stonehaven on the coast.
