A Lithuanian immigrant and his family come to Chicago for work and are ground down by the meatpacking industry. The map runs across the South Side: the real Union Stock Yards and the packinghouse district called Packingtown, the immigrant slum of Back of the Yards beside it, the dump and fertilizer works on its edge, and the downtown Loop where the ruined hero drifts at the end. Sinclair reported from the yards in 1904 before writing the book.
