Tsitsi Dangarembga
The eastern highlands of colonial Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. A Shona girl's world runs between the family homestead in the Manicaland communal lands, by the Nyamarira, and the town of Umtali twenty miles off, renamed Mutare after independence. Between them lie the trading store and bus route, the mission school her uncle runs, and, far to the west, a convent that promises escape. Rusape and Mutare, the two real towns that frame the region, sit about ninety kilometres apart.
