The Schlegel sisters keep an old family house in a quiet London square, full of books, talk and music, where they try to live by personal relations and the life of the mind. Its coming loss to redevelopment shadows the book, a sign of how the London they love is being swept away by flats and money. Wickham Place is the fragile home of the novel's cultivated ideals.

Chapter 6-11

inspired by Wickham Place is a fictional London square; Forster imagined the Schlegels in the comfortable streets of Marylebone. The pin sites their house in that district; the square itself is invented, so treat the point as the neighbourhood rather than an address.
