Humbert Humbert Ramsdale, the Haze house
Part 1
Humbert takes lodgings in the Haze household in the quiet town of Ramsdale and is undone at once by the sight of the widow's daughter Dolores sunning herself in the yard. He marries the mother to stay near the child; when the mother dies under a car, the road opens in front of him.
Part 1, ch. 10-17
inspired by Ramsdale is a fictional New England town and appears on no map. It is anchored here to Great Barrington in the western Massachusetts Berkshires, the kind of leafy small town Nabokov drew on, as a representative real-world stand-in rather than an identified location.
