Chapter 1
The narrator's childhood is spent here, in a poor rural household of subsistence farmers where school fees are scarce and a girl's schooling comes last. The death of her brother, away at the mission, is what finally opens a place for her. The communal lands were the reserves colonial policy pushed African families onto, and the book opens on that hard, ordinary ground.

inspired by The homestead is an invented family compound. The novel places it about twenty miles from Umtali, by the Nyamarira river, in the communal lands set aside for Black farmers under colonial rule; this marks a representative point in that countryside between Mutare and Rusape.

Tambudzai Rusape, the district town
Chapter 1
Beyond the homestead is the trading centre and bus stop: a row of small stores, women selling eggs and fruit under the trees, and the buses that carry people to town and to school. It is the seam between the rural family and the wider colonial economy. Rusape is the real district town that anchors this stretch of the eastern countryside, about ninety kilometres from Mutare.

inferred The novel's bus terminus and market, the cluster of tuckshops the family call the magrosa, is unnamed and sits about two miles from the homestead. Rusape is the real Manicaland market and bus town of that region, on the main road to the capital, and stands in for the trading centre the family's world turns on.
