A quietly dystopian England where children raised at a secluded boarding school are clones bred to give up their organs. The map runs from the rural southern countryside that hides Hailsham, north-east through the remote farmland of the Cottages to the Norfolk seaside at Cromer, and out along the flat coastal fields Kathy drives as a carer.

Part One

The narrator grows up at a secluded boarding school in the English countryside, cut off behind sports fields and woods. Only slowly do the pupils grasp that they are clones, raised to be healthy so their organs can later be harvested. The school is invented; its name and its hushed rural setting point to the deep south of England.

Part One

inspired by Hailsham is a fictional school. Ishiguro shares its name with a real market town in East Sussex and evokes a sheltered, rural southern England, so this marks that town as a stand-in for a place the novel never fixes on a map.
