Allende never names the country, but its geography and its history are Chile's: the big house on the corner in the capital, the Tres Marías estate out in the countryside, and, in the last chapters, a very real September. The coup, the palace under fire and the stadium turned into a prison are Santiago in 1973. The map runs from the capital's streets north to the Aconcagua valley that stands in for the family's land.
