A farmhouse in rural western Estonia, the woods around it, and the country town beyond, held across the decades from the deportations of the 1940s to the first free summer of 1992. From this Laanemaa yard the story pulls east to Tallinn and, in the trafficking chapters, out of the country altogether.

The book opens and closes here, at an old woman's farmhouse in a village in rural western Estonia, where in the summer of 1992 a battered young stranger collapses in the yard. The house holds the whole story: the two women's lives, the family's deportations, and the secrets kept under its floor. The village is invented, but the setting is the Laanemaa countryside.

Haapsalu, a quiet resort and railway town on the west coast, is the real centre of the Laanemaa the novel inhabits, close enough to the farmhouse to stand for that outside world.

The route out of the former Soviet Union runs west into Germany, where the young woman is held and exploited before she flees back east toward Estonia. Berlin stands for this stretch of the journey, the far end of a chain that reaches all the way back to a farmhouse yard in Laanemaa. The subject is treated with restraint, not sensation.
