The Cornish coast near Fowey, where du Maurier set Manderley, the great house on the cliffs above the sea. She modelled it on Menabilly, the real estate she later leased and lived in, with its cove and ruined boathouse below at Polridmouth. The map runs from the house down to the drowning cove and along to the harbour town, with a distant opening at Monte Carlo.

Before Cornwall, the book opens on the Riviera. A shy young woman, companion to a rich and tiresome American, meets the widowed Maxim de Winter at a Monte Carlo hotel. He proposes within weeks, and she leaves as his wife, bound for his house in England.

Chapters 2-6

explicit Monte Carlo is a real place and is named in the novel, but it sits far from the Cornish setting; marked outsideSetting and sited at the centre of the resort, as the hotel where the narrator meets Maxim is not a real address.
