Ch. 1
The book opens with an insurance man leaping from the hospital roof in his blue silk wings, and with Milkman born the next day, the first Black baby delivered inside those walls. The street the Black community renames in defiance sets the tone of a place that keeps its own history. This is the city Milkman must eventually leave to understand.

inspired by The novel's unnamed Michigan city is drawn from Morrison's own Detroit-shaped north, though she keeps its names fictional: "Not Doctor Street" and "No Mercy Hospital" are invented plays on the city's real geography. Sited in central Detroit as the real ground the opening evokes.
