The village
This is the shore the story circles back to: the beach where the skiffs are drawn up, and the shack where Santiago sleeps under his newspapers. Everything he risks out on the water is measured against getting home to this small, poor harbour.

explicit Cojímar is the real fishing village Hemingway drew on and long identified with the story; the small harbour with its shingle and skiffs is where the old man keeps his boat and returns each night.
