Chapter 2
On the club's first journey out of town the travellers reach the old cathedral city of Rochester and lodge at its chief coaching inn. Here the smooth-talking stranger Mr Jingle borrows Mr Winkle's coat for the charity ball and provokes a near-duel. The Bull sets the pattern for the whole book: a good inn, a fine dinner, and a scrape born of misunderstanding.
Chapter 2
explicit The Pickwickians put up at the Bull at Rochester on their first excursion; sited at the real coaching inn on Rochester High Street, later the Royal Victoria and Bull Hotel. Marked outside the setting box as an excursion into Kent.
