The Purple Land

Richard Lamb loose in the Banda Oriental, the purple land east of the river: he lands at Montevideo, rides north through Canelones and Florida toward an estancia on the Paysandú border, and is swept into Santa Coloma's doomed revolt across the Cuchilla Grande and the coast of Rocha. Hudson rode this ground himself, and it brings Uruguay, and South America, into the atlas.

and in the evening we disembarked in Montevideo, the city of refuge. We proceeded to an hotel, where for several days we lived very happily, enchanted with each other's society;

Richard Lamb and his young wife Paquíta come ashore at Montevideo, the capital on the north bank of the Río de la Plata, having fled Buenos Ayres across the water. The great hill, the Cerro, that gives the city its name stands over the harbour. From this refuge Lamb sets out alone into the Banda Oriental, and the wandering that fills the book begins.
