On the morning of his thirtieth birthday, Josef K. is arrested in his own bedroom by two warders who eat his breakfast and will not say what he is charged with. The ordinary rented room, with the neighbours watching from across the courtyard, is where the whole machinery quietly begins.

inspired by The city in the novel is never named; it is drawn from Kafka's Prague, where he lived and worked. Frau Grubach's boarding house is fictional and given no address; sited here in the Old Town, the dense quarter of rented rooms and shared landings that Kafka knew.
